Gluten free Christmas – mini yule logs from Sainsbury’s

I’m trying desperately hard to get festive this year. I’ve got the advent calendar up, my Christmas jumper on and Bublé in the stereo. I’ve even got a Christmas shopping trip planned and I’ve been on my staff Christmas party (and got hideously drunk, but we won’t mention that – it’s still hurting!) So why can’t I get into the festive mood?

Perhaps the reason is simple – there is simply not enough festive food in my life. Without the mince pies, yule logs, cheese and biscuits and the odd naughty glass of mulled wine, it just is not Christmas for me. So today that changed: I bought some mini yule logs.

These appear to be new this year at Sainsbury’s and when I saw them there was no other option – they were going straight in the basket. Little chocolatey cakes layered in chocolate frosting and a dusting of icing sugar, they seemed like quite the festive treat.

There were five in a pack, but when I got them out it seemed they were more yule bricks than yule logs. They were oblong – unlike any log I have ever seen – and more like bars. But without quibbling too much over what some would say is a minor point, I got stuck in.

Any chocolate lover’s dream, these were sticky with a generous layer for frosting and perfectly sickly. Perfect for when you are having one of those evenings where you want to pig out and not care about anything else. Me and Steve, I am ashamed to say, did demolish this pack pretty quickly! They were very sweet and did leave me feeling a little sickly afterwards – on reflection I think one would have been perfectly adequate!

I would probably buy these again, and I think next time I would try warming them for 10-20 seconds in the microwave in the hope they went all gooey and fudgy. They were a great treat and a real pick me up as I have been fighting off a cold for some time now.

I’m now on a mission to try and find as much food as possible to stuff myself with before the festive season is over too soon. My training has gone completely off track and my healthy eating seems to have died a death – but, well, it is nearly Christmas after all….
