Eight gluten free places to eat near Bridport, Dorset

I went on a family camp last weekend and I was so amazed at how many gluten free places to eat were in Bridport and West Bay. This is a lovely area of Dorset on the Jurassic Coast, with plenty of little beaches, harbours and coastal walks. Bridport itself is a quirky market town while nearby West Bay has a lovely harbour (great for crabbing) and plenty of shops and cafes to mooch around.

The main event of our camping trip in the village of Burton Bradstock was a big family barbecue, but we managed to venture out and try a few gluten free places in Bridport and West Bay during the course of the weekend. I think I was most happy about the fact there seem to be LOADS of places to get a gluten free ice-cream cone in Dorset!

So here are some of the gluten free places to eat in Bridport and West Bay that we tried…

Bella’s, Bridport

I’m mentioning Bella’s in Bridport first because they were SO helpful in pointing us in the direction of other gluten free places to eat nearby. Bella’s do a range of gluten free (and some dairy free) cakes as well as some amazing vegan salads and other goodies. If you want to grab lunch or a snack I’d highly recommend them – they’re really up on their cross contamination with two coeliacs in the family! 

I was kindly gifted some of their bakes and a salad to try and they were all delicious. We had a gluten and dairy free coffee and walnut cake, a toffee pecan brownie and a Bakewell slice, as well as a falafel salad which had so many delicious treats in it! I’d recommend getting there in the morning or calling ahead to order as they tend to sell out fast.

Rise, West Bay

Nothing was going to get in the way of me going to Rise at West Bay and trying out their AMAZING gluten free menu – and it was so worth the trip. We opted to share a gluten free fish and chips and a huge plate of gluten free calamari and both were incredible. The decor looks amazing and you can enjoy your meal looking out over the water – it’s beautiful.

There was a note for coeliacs on the menu which instantly put me at ease, stating they have a separate gluten free fryer. The staff were also super nice and really reassuring that all my food would be 100% gluten free. I’d highly recommend this place as the food was just amazing.

Granny Gothards, West Bay

This cute little ice-cream shop in West Bay offers a huge array of flavours and there’s lots of signage promising gluten free too. They have gluten free ice-cream cones and a huge selection to choose from, including ‘adult’ flavours which are a little boozy!

I was really struggling to choose as I was swaying towards the peach and prosecco flavour, but in the end I went for a curveball and tried the ginger ice-cream. It was lovely! It was so nice to be by the seaside eating out of a gluten free ice-cream cone and I’d recommend you visit Granny Gothards and check it out for yourself.

Purbeck Ice-Cream, West Bay

We visited a Purbeck Ice-Cream at Lulworth Cove before we reached Bridport so when I saw one at West Bay I was optimistic they’d have a gluten free ice-cream cone. And they did! All of the Purbeck Ice-Creams are gluten free which meant I had a lot to choose from. But having it from a gluten free cone makes it so much better, right!?

I went for a banoffee one which was incredible, with thick swirls of toffee sauce throughout. The previous visit in Lulworth I’d had a strawberry and champagne one which was also amazing. I can’t wait to go back to Dorset and try some more flavours now!

The Stables, Bridport

We tried to get a take-away from The Stables but it was really busy and we didn’t fancy the 40 minute wait. I absolutely LOVE this chain and we had in fact visited the one in Bournemouth a few nights before (pictured). The gluten free pizzas are insanely good and they have so much cider it’s basically my idea of heaven! Bridport is where The Stables began (the same people own Rise in West Bay) so it’s definitely worth a visit. 

West Bay Tea Rooms, West Bay

We didn’t get time to pop into West Bay Tea Rooms but a quick Google had thrown it up as an option for somewhere to eat lunch. They had signs outside advertising gluten free and it’s right next to the long stay car park as you walk towards the harbour in West Bay.

Café Sladers, West Bay

This place looked lovely and had signs outside advertising gluten free. Again, we didn’t have time to pop in here but their menu was clearly marked and they advertised they catered for vegans and vegetarians too, so might be worth a visit if you’re in West Bay.

Hive Beach Café, Burton Bradstock

Hive Beach Café was a 30-minute walk from our campsite and worth the stroll. It has a lovely decked area you can sit at to eat and watch the waves roll onto the pebbled beach. We sat on the beach for a bit before grabbing one of their ciders to enjoy in the sun. However when I messaged them to ask about gluten free they said they did usually have options both sweet and savoury.
