When chatting to my hairdresser the other week, I discovered her Mum was wheat intolerant, and we ended up exchanging our list of gluten free haunts.
I don’t live in the biggest town in the world, so I was really pleasantly suprised to find a cafe offering gluten free food I had never been in before.
Green Lanes Cafe is right in the centre of our ‘shopping centre’ so it seemed only right to stop there for lunch after attempting to start my Christmas shopping.
And, low and behold, I was very pleased to find this on the menu….
Excited at the amount of fillings I could eat, it took me a while to decide but I eventually opted for a bulk standard cheese and ham.
As I’d never had a panini before, I thought this would be a good starting place!
After a long queue, I eventually ordered and sat back with a coffee, waiting for my panini to arrive. Not long after it did….
Call me fussy, but my ‘panini’ looked remarkably like a Warburton’s gluten free roll… but I thought something is better than nothing, so I went with it anyway.
The filling was more than generous – spilling out of the sides – and it was tasty, but I felt a tiny bit cheated as I had been hoping to try a gluten free panini!
However, to be able to have somewhere in the town centre where I can go for a ‘normal’ lunch is great, so I think I’ll definitely be back to sample some of the other flavours!
Hi Sarah, thanks for your review. I have known about Green Lanes paninis for 6 months or more, came across it by chance when with my parents back in the Spring. Was going to have the usual jacket potato but then got all excited when I spied the gluten free panini menu. Anyway, have been there again since then, and on the first occasion bought 2 panini rolls to take away and they were most definitely not Warburtons. I have to agree that yours does look suspiciously like a Warbies roll but I wonder if perhaps they had run out of their usual supplies and had to get some alternatives in? The white panini I had was flat and when toasted had the stripes across the top. As I say I brought a couple home but one is still in the freezer as I couldn’t recreate the griddled look at home. If I remember rightly they are made at a small bakery somewhere in Somerset. I can’t go and turn out the freezer right this minute as hubby has just painted a door and the freezer door will go back on it if I am not careful. Will let you know when I find it (hopefully the label is still attached). Perhaps you can go in and enquire if you can take away some of those white paninis and see what they say.
You will find Green Lanes cafe on the North Devon page on Coeliac UK website where we have recommendations to eat etc. I have also just added Custom House, as read your review for that months ago, but actually visited last Tuesday and it was amazing. My cousin and I both had the chicken which was actually a whole breast rather than a burger and the bun was great too. I am not sure but I thought theirs could possibly have been a M&S brown roll, but it was good.quality. Also, we both pigged out and had Christmas Choc Brownie which was gluten free and had cranberries and winter spices in them. It was a good job we got to Barnstaple too late for lunch as we hadn’t realised that Custom House is only open in the evening, so I would have been disappointed.
That’s interesting – I went back again the other day to see if I got a panini this time, but was still given the same as last time. Next time I go in I shall have to ask them where they get them and why they are not doing the white paninis anymore! I’m glad you enjoyed the Custom House as well, it is amazing there! You shall have to try their polenta cheese sticks for starters next time – they are not to be missed!
