I’m all for quick and easy dinner ideas at the moment and this gluten free hummus pasta is a great midweek meal idea.

I’ve seen people talk about using hummus (or houmous!) as a pasta sauce but up until now have never tried it. Now I can’t believe I hadn’t had it before!

Mixed with sun dried tomatoes, jarred red peppers and a squeeze of lemon you can turn any flavour hummus into a quick and easy sauce.

This is an easy vegan hummus pasta recipe which can be made with gluten free pasta for a simple and tasty dish.

It works as a standalone meal, or is equally as good served as a cold gluten free pasta salad for a gluten free lunch idea.

I love making hummus pasta sauce for lunch or dinner and it’s a great side dish for a summer salad spread, picnic or BBQ too.

Is hummus good in pasta?

The short and sweet answer is yes! You may not think it but hummus does actually make a lovely, creamy, vegan pasta sauce.

The hummus brings flavour and creaminess to the dish but it’s actually a pretty healthy addition – this dish is packed full of protein!

I sometimes use low fat hummus for a lighter meal but you could mix it up by using flavoured hummus if you want to.

Or why not make your own homemade hummus instead?

It adds a kind of creamy texture and taste without the need for any dairy.

And if you want to add meat to the dish, some crispy fried chorizo or shredded roast chicken work wonderfully as a hot or cold addition.

How to make hummus pasta sauce

This creamy hummus pasta will take less than 10 minutes to make so it’s perfect for a night when it’s too hot to cook, or you’re short on time.

What’s even better is this gluten free pasta recipe can also be eaten cold, though gluten free pasta tends to be best when eaten fresh and when still hot.

If you’re eating this cold, I recommend using a more expensive gluten free pasta such as Napolina or Garofalo as I find these don’t go hard when cooled.

This makes it perfect for picnics as well as being served as part of a salad spread, party food buffet or as a gluten free BBQ side.

This hummus sauce for pasta is a truly versatile dish and one I always whip up when I am short on time and energy.

What ingredients do I need to make hummus pasta?

This gluten free pasta with hummus sauce only needs a few simple ingredients and most of them you’ll probably have in stock.

To make this gluten free hummus pasta you will need:

Gluten Free Pasta – Any shape will do, but if you’re cooking this to eat cold I’d recommend a good quality pasta which doesn’t go hard when cooled. Garofalo or Napolina’s pastas are my current favourites!

Hummus – Obviously the key to any good hummus pasta is a great hummus! I love using plain or low fat hummus but this will work well with any flavours. Try caramelised onion, red pepper or smoked hummus for something different.

Sun Dried Tomatoes – You’ll want a jar of sun dried tomatoes in oil for this. I use around six and chop them, or you can buy them pre-chopped. Make sure you get sun dried tomatoes in oil so you can use some of this for frying.

Jarred Red Peppers – You can easily pick up a jar of roasted peppers in the shops. Use either pre-sliced or get whole peppers and slice them. If you prefer you could chop a red pepper instead and fry it off before adding the pasta.

Lemon Juice – I like to use the juice of half a lemon, freshly squeezed. You can use bottled lemon juice or omit this if you don’t like it. But I like the tang this adds and it works perfectly with the hummus.

Spinach Leaves – You can omit these or use frozen spinach if you prefer. Any green veg works well in this, so you could try rocket or even frozen peas instead.

Garlic – I always use chopped frozen garlic for ease. But you can crush or chop fresh garlic, or use a garlic paste if you prefer.

My gluten free hummus pasta recipe

This gluten free pasta recipe with hummus makes enough for two people.

It’s easy to up-size or down-size the quantities depending on how many people you’re feeding.

You can also make this ahead of time and eat it cold, though I do find gluten free pasta works best when eaten hot and freshly cooked.
