My gluten free Pea and Ham Soup recipe is super easy, uses minimal ingredients, and takes 15 minutes to make.

That’s right, this thick, creamy, and vibrant green soup can be warming your belly in no time at all.

Plus it’s a great way to get some extra veggies into your diet and use up any leftover ham from a Sunday roast or Christmas dinner.

I always use the leftovers of my slow cooker ginger beer gammon in this soup, and it is great for batching up and freezing too.

Serve it up with a helping of gluten free croutons, a crusty white gluten free baguette or a freshly baked soft bread roll for dipping.

Whether you want a light dinner idea or a warming lunch, this vibrant pea soup with chunks of ham is always going to hit the spot.

A 10-minute soup recipe

The best thing about pea and ham soup is that it is so quick to make, so perfect when you’re in a hurry.

Unlike other vegetable-based soups, this only takes 10 minutes of cooking, a quick blend, and then it’s done.

I make it with frozen peas so it’s really cheap to make too. It’s a great gluten free lunch on a budget and you can freeze any leftovers.

The peas give this soup an awesome vibrant green colour too, which is perfect for cheering up a cold day.

Make this soup in advance in bulk and freeze it, or even take it with you to work or on a walk in a Thermos flask.

I like mine served up with some slices of fresh gluten free bread, such as my gluten free soda bread – or a good quality gluten free supermarket bread will do.

Pea and Ham Soup Ingredients

You only need five ingredients for this gluten free pea and ham soup recipe and it’s so quick to make.

This gluten free soup recipe is also dairy free so is easy to make for people with multiple allergens and intolerances as well as coeliac disease.

There’s a printable recipe card below but for the shopping list you will need:

  • Ham – I always use leftover cooked ham from making my slow cooker gammon in ginger beer recipe. Which is why I often make this soup with my Christmas leftovers! You can also buy pre-cooked ham hock if you want to make this soup on a whim.
  • Peas – Using frozen peas makes this a super cheap recipe to make. I alternate between Garden Peas and Petit Pois depending on whatever I have available.
  • Onion – Just a standard onion will do, but you can use red onion or shallots if you prefer. Shallots will give a more delicate flavour.
  • Vegetable Stock – Always double check to ensure you’re using a gluten free stock as some stock cubes contain wheat. Check out my guide to gluten free stock cubes and gravies if you’re feeling a bit stuck.
  • Garlic – Of course I use garlic – it’s my favourite ingredient! Omit this if you’re not a fan, I just add a clove for a subtle bit of flavour. You can use garlic paste or pre-chopped garlic instead of a fresh clove if you prefer.

How to make this pea and ham soup

Making pea and ham soup is simple – all you need to do is soften the onion and garlic, add the ham, peas and stock, and boil for five minutes.

Blend it up and your soup is ready. Yes, it really is that quick and simple!

I prefer to make this by blending half of the ham with the soup and then stirring the other half in, so you still get some chunks of meat.

However, if you’d prefer a smoother soup with all the flavour, you could blend all of the ham in. It doesn’t matter flavour-wise which you choose.

You can also sprinkle some on top to give the soup a bit more of a colour clash when you serve it up.

It’s so easy and versatile, you can customise this soup however you like.

Try adding in some fresh thyme too if you fancy a herby punch.

GLUTEN FREE PEA AND HAM SOUP RECIPE
Yield: 2

Gluten free pea and ham soup

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 15 minutes

This gluten free pea and ham soup is so easy to make! You only need five ingredients and it takes less than 15 minutes to make. This recipe serves two people but you can easily increase the volume to make a big batch.

Ingredients

  • 1 onion (finely chopped)
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 150g finely chopped cooked ham
  • 500ml gluten free vegetable stock
  • 300g frozen peas

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil in a large pan and then add the garlic and onion. Fry for 5-6 minutes until starting to soften.
  2. Add half of the ham hock and fry for another 2-3 minutes. Add the peas, stir until mixed and then cover with the stock. Pop a lid on the pan, bring to the boil and simmer for five minutes.
  3. Remove from the heat, add to a blender (or use a stick blender) and blend until smooth. Be careful not to overfill your blender - you don't want to get burnt!
  4. Pour back into a pan, add the rest of the ham hock and stir through before serving with gluten free bread for dipping.

Notes

  • This soup is dairy free but for an extra added treat, if you can have dairy, try adding a swirl of crème fraîche before serving.
  • Can be stored in the fridge for around 3 days or can be frozen for up to six months.

  1. I would use blender to whizz up some gluten free nutritional soups for when our baby arrives to help with feeding ease during breastfeeding and to then whizz up weaning meals when little one is bigger!

  2. That soup looks absolutely amazing! I loved making home made soups (i make a mad chicken and tomato one!) when I lived with my parents but I unfortunatly don’t have a blender in my new flat. I would be so happy if I won this one, and would probably be living of home made soups for at least a month because I’ve missed it so much!

  3. Your soup looks delicious! I’ve recently started getting into homemade soup – my favourite at the moment being leak and potato which has been perfect for lunches on these wintery days!!

  4. Your pea soup looks gorgeous Sarah…. I think I would give a test run on left over veg soup and then whip up a bumper batch of houmous!

  5. That soup looks so vibrant!! Mine never looks anything so colourful as that! I think I could happily exist on pea and ham soup.

If I won a blender it would be much easier for me to eat more healthily when I’m flaring up – I tend to rely on nutritional milkshake type stuff rather than real food because soup is too much hard work when I have so little energy.
