I’ve published a few gluten free North Devon pieces, but I thought it might be helpful to focus on a few popular spots.
Following my gluten free Woolacombe and gluten free Barnstaple guides, the next step was to bring you my gluten free Croyde and Saunton guide.
Because they are small places and close together I’ve grouped them into one handy post!
All of these are correct as of summer 2021 – I will try to update them as and when things change.
Plus some of the pop-ups might not be there out of season so it’s worth checking.
Gluten free in Croyde
Croyde is a gorgeous little village and the place I used to always go to visit the beach when I was a child.
I worked here for a few years during university breaks too and had the best summers.
The village and the beach will always have a special place in my heart, so here are some of the best gluten free places to eat in Croyde.
Blue Groove, Hobbs Hill*
Blue Groove recently invited me to try out their gluten free menu and I was super impressed.
The menu is clearly marked with loads of gluten free options for breakfast, lunch and dinner – including banoffee pie for dessert!
It’s also had a refit this year and looks amazing with lots of seating inside and out. I’d definitely recommend a trip here.
New Coast Kitchen
New Coast Kitchen is situated in Hobbs Hill in the centre of Croyde village and are really good for providing gluten free options.
A lot of their fine dining menu is gluten free anyway and if you speak to them ahead of time they’re always really good at catering for coeliac.
I tried them when they had a pop-up a little while ago but I’m so excited to go back and try their menu – including their Sunday roasts.
Cluck Chicken, various pop-ups
New to Croyde for 2022 is the amazing Cluck Street Food, who are currently running sporadic pop-ups on the road just before Ruda Holiday Park.
However, they will be running a summer pop-up at Freshwell Camping from May 2022 where you’ll be able to get their dreamy fried chicken all summer long.
Honestly, their gluten free fried chicken is insane and the smashed cucumbers may be the best thing I have EVER eaten. A must try.
The Hub, Hobbs Hill
I worked at The Hub in Hobbs Hill when it was formerly The Old Cream Shop for years and spent some of my best summers here!
I’m yet to go back to see it as The Hub but they do all sorts of gluten free goodies including pizza and crêpes.
Definitely one to swing by when you’re in Croyde – oh, and they do amazing ice-creams as well!
Biffen’s Kitchen
I’ve been wanting to get out to try Biffen’s Kitchen for ages as his food looks out of this world!
Located at Ocean Pitch campsite in Croyde, this surf-inspired street food offers menus Thursday to Saturday to take away.
The Jerk nights sound incredible and most of the dishes are gluten free with lots of vegan options.
The Thatch, Croyde
It’s been a while since I’ve been to The Thatch but they always used to be pretty good for gluten free – plus it’s the place to go for a drink in Croyde.
In the winter it’s super cosy too and it’s always popular year round. It’s worth popping in to ask because I do remember them having some options.
Sandleigh Tea Rooms, Baggy Point
If you’re heading out for a walk round the stunning Baggy Point then the National Trust-owned Sandleigh Tea Rooms have some gluten free options.
I believe they have some sweet and savoury gluten free choices so it’s definitely worth a look.
Gluten free in Saunton
There isn’t really much to Saunton apart from a glorious stretch of sandy beaches and miles of dunes to play with.
It’s a popular spot for families so get there early if you’re heading there on a sunny day – I’ve often seen the car park full and them turning people away by lunch.
There are a couple of spots to eat here, and both do gluten free options.
Saunton Sands Hotel & Source Spa*
Saunton Sands Hotel is one of The Brends’ hotels and offers a good variety of gluten free options.
I find it best to ring ahead when booking and let them know about any dietary requirements.
However you can get gluten free afternoon tea as well as gluten free lunch and dinner options too.
They did a huge range of sandwiches, as well as the most beautiful gluten free cakes and warm scones!
If you’re planning a visit to Saunton then I can highly recommend a visit to Source Spa.
It’s the most incredible spa venue – the thermal suite is gorgeous and you can sit in the infinity-style hot tub looking out over the beach.
There’s also an amazing relaxation room with a sun deck, the perfect place to relax.
They do twilight or spa day packages so you can relax and enjoy the spa and then have some of the fab food in Saunton Sands afterwards. A dreamy day!
Beachside Grill*
I was gifted a meal for two at Beachside Grill and was so pleased with the choice there!
They are able to make gluten free burgers and sandwiches and have lots of coeliac-safe options.
All their chips are fried separately (they’re SO good) and there’s even a chocolate torte for dessert.
It’s honestly the best spot if you want gluten free at Saunton to enjoy the beach views and grab a bite.
Saunton Break Cafe
If you don’t have time to sit down for a meal, you’ll be pleased to know there are some gluten free take-away options at Saunton Break Cafe.
The gluten free pasties are lovely and they often have some lunch options too.

Sarah, the Manor House in Croyde serve gluten free food or provide gluten free options. Food was lovely, ate there three times with no ill effects so although the weather was cold my heart and tummy were very warm and full 😊
Ah that is good to know! I used to work there as a teenager but haven’t been back since – will have to check out what they do! 🙂
We arrived in Croyde yesterday for a week’s holiday and tonight we went to Biffen’s kitchen for dinner. Such lovely guys who were so helpful and had the daily special of slow cooked Malaysian goat curry – was so delicious! We started to eat at the tables they have there but due to the threat of a storm we decided to take a run back to our apartment just few minutes away. I am sure we will return again during this week. Highly recommend this little shack. We would never have found this without your recommendation. Thank you so much!
Yay I’m so happy! I haven’t tried the goat curry yet, only the katsu, but I am dying to go back and try it soon!!!
