Well, isn’t it nice when great gluten free news comes along by the bucket load? This week has brought two exciting announcements – gluten free sandwiches in Tesco and gluten free meals at Asda cafes! If you’re like me, you’re probably squirming with excitement right now (I squealed the news to my colleagues, who thought sandwiches were vastly unamusing). I think ‘normal’ people don’t quite appreciate being able to grab a sandwich on-the-go like we coeliacs do!
But I digress, on to the good stuff:
Tesco launches gluten free sandwich range
That’s right, the first supermarket giant is officially on board! From April 28 (Monday) Tesco will be launching these beauties in ‘selected’ stores. This worries me slightly, because ‘selected’ normally means ‘not in North Devon’ – but I shall live in hope!
Made with Genius gluten free bread, the range is set to include four varieties:
- Egg Salad (£2.80) – suitable for vegetarians
- Ham & Cheddar Ploughman’s (£3.00)
- Chicken Salad (£3.00)
- Carrot & Houmous (£3.00) – suitable for dairy free & vegetarians
Personally I am intrigued by this range. The fact that it has your ‘standard’ fillings, as well as something a bit different, is a bit of a breath of fresh air. Just the idea of being able to nip into Tesco if I’m in a rush and grab a sandwich is amazing news. I think this is a really big step for us ‘gluten free-ers’ – Sainsbury’s take note please!!
Sadly the range launches while I am on holiday, so I’m looking forward to trying these as soon as I get home!
Amy’s Kitchen hits Asda cafes
Now for the second bit of good news this week – the gluten free brand Amy’s Kitchen will be launching it’s (AMAZING) rice mac and cheese (see my review here) and chunky tomato soup in 225 Asda cafes across the country as part of their gluten free options.
This is brilliant news – I certainly will be heading over to Asda more often to do my shopping – and the changes also take effect on April 28. It’s starting to look like a great day for coeliacs!
The chunky tomato soup is set to cost £2 and the rice mac and cheese will cost £4. Interesting how Asda will be using ready meals in the cafe – but probably (and I am assuming) not much different to their ‘normal’ meals….
So there you have it – put April 28 in your diaries and go do the rounds of the supermarkets!! Let me know what you think if you try the new sandwiches – I can’t wait!
Great news mate, as a Coeliac in North Devon, I to often cringe at the lack of choice we often see down here. But see this as a step in the right direction. Is it only me, or are we getting more recognition, that meals for Coeliacs are going on mainstream menus, does suggest the message and the number of people who are Coeliac is getting through. Thanks as always.
Excited to learn about the sandwiches – especially the carrot and houmous one. Sounds delicious and great to have something other than egg as a veggie option.
I’m pleased and surprised about the Asda cafe offerings. I think its good they are using pre-prepared meals as it cuts down on the risk of contamination. At least Amy’s stuff is generally pretty healthy too. Finally things moving in the right direction!
Oh wow. YAY!! The ability to grab a sandwich! I’m easily pleased I know, but this is very good news. I’m going to check my massive superstore Tesco on Thursday next week and see it they are there!
Oh.my,god. This has to be the best gluten-free-news I’ve heard- like ever!! Amazing stuff…well done Tescos!! I cannot wait to try these sandwiches…think I’ll be so excited I’d have to try one of each when they finally hit the stores!
