A bit of a random topic, but as I sit here sipping my green tea in a hungover state I thought a quick post on some yummy teas would be revelant!

Having coeliac disease has always meant generally I eat a more healthy diet, but this year I really want to step it up a bit.

Looking after your gut when you have coeliac disease is really important, and drinking crappy fizzy drinks and milky, sugary coffees is not the best idea!

I’m a self confessed coffee addict, but this year would really like to try and switch to teas which have more health benefits than a quick instant coffee with milk and sugar!

So here, to start the year, is my top three favourite teas!

1. Peppermint tea

dscn0700Now I’ve written a blog post on this before, but really wanted to reiterate how amazing peppermint tea is if you have coeliac disease, or any food intolerance come to think of it!

Peppermint has amazing digestive qualities, and I’ve often found it soothing when I’ve had a ‘gluten attack’ or eaten something that hasn’t made me feel great.

I took me a little while to get used to the taste, but I find it best drunk warm (not hot) and you can even add a bit of honey to sweeten it.

I would definitely recommend this if you have eaten gluten by accident – it may not be able to cure you but a few cups will certainly make you feel better!

2. Green tea with pomegranate

green tea pomegranateI have tried for years to drink green tea without positively retching, but now I have finally found a way to overcome the bitter taste and drink it!

I picked up a box of green tea with pomegranate tea bags one day, and never looked back!

Brew for 3-4 minutes, remove the teabag and leave to cool for a little while, and this tea really is quite yummy!

The sweetness of the pomegranate really takes the bitter edge off the green tea, and it’s packed full of antioxidants so is great for your skin too!

There are so many health benefits of green tea I couldn’t even begin to list them all, but it’s certainly worth giving this a try if you hate plain-old green tea but want to benefit from it.

3. Hibiscus and ginger tea

68636-yogi-ginger-hibiscus-teaI first tried hibiscus tea made with the freshly dried flowers when I went to Uganda in 2011 and it was absolutely amazing!

Coming back home after two weeks of drinking the sweet, calming drink, it was horrible to not be able to have it anymore.

However, I found these Yogi teabags, and although expensive they are delicious!

The ginger gives it a zingy edge, but leave this to brew while you drink it and the flavour just keeps on developing.

A great winter warmer to enjoy before bed, this is my treat when I want something a bit different, and I love it!

What’s your favourite tea?

Whether you’re into herbal delights, fruity cuppas or just a plain milk-and-two-sugars, I’d love to hear what your favourite is.

I think I’m going to make a real effort to keep trying new flavours, so would welcome any suggestions!

  1. Rooibos (Red bush) tea is a favorite from South Africa. Caffeine free, it makes a great cappuccino and is lovely before bed with a squeeze of lemon/slice of ginger/spoonful of honey (or all three!).

    1. I’ve always been curious about Rooibos, do you drink it with milk? I think Steve may have some in his cupboard, I may have to go put the kettle on…

  2. Love the suggestions especially the green tea & pomegranate as I hate normal tasting tea – being a coffee lover I started a Bootcamp plan last July & have not had a coffee since and I feel fantastic (not today as hangover too lol) keep up the great blog
I love lemon & ginger herbal tea.

  3. I drink peppermint tea until it comes out of my ears – I haven’t been able to drink black tea for years because it inflames my joints and I’ve recently stopped drinking coffee (decaff as well as normal) because it doesn’t suit my stomach.
I agree, herbal teas take a bit of getting used to but I drink peppermint tea with milk. Sounds disgusting but it’s actually surprisingly nice and I don’t feel like I’m missing out on ordinary tea at all!

  4. I agree with you on the peppermint tea. I started drinking it years ago when I was diagnosed with IBS but peppermint oil capsules didn’t agree with me. I also like nettle tea which is good for a detox, although it’s an acquired taste and one I can’t quite stomach without chucking some sugar in! And I drink fennel tea in the evenings when I’m dieting as it helps suppress the appetite. Better brew a cup now then!

  5. I discovered a range of tulsi (holy basil) teas at an organic food fair and particularly like the ginger one for settling my stomach. Otherwise I like plain old black tea but am fussy which one. Currently it’s Twinings Everyday. By the way, I drink my teas as a teapochino – pour it back and forwards between two mugs to create a froth. Tastes lighter and as if poured from a teapot.

  6. I have a green tea every morning and I feel so much better for it. I can’t stomache normal tea 1st thing in the morning anymore it makes me feel so groggy. My favourite green tea is Twinnings green tea with pineapple and grapefruit, really lovely. Also if you like peppermint tea Whittard and Chelsea do a nice one, although I have to say I’m struggling to get used to the taste.
