Freshly made pancakes, still warm and wafting sweet smells of cinnammon and sugary dreams were not the kind of thing I expected to be able to buy in the small holiday village of Woolacombe, North Devon.
Absent mindedly scouring the board with a taste of envy, I was shocked when I noticed the magic words: Gluten Free Available.
Without a second thought, I ran in to find that not only did this place make gluten free pancakes, but they had all the knowledge of contamination of the importance of keeping everything gluten free separate. GJ’s Pancake Bar in Woolacombe has now become my new favourite place.
With a range of sweet and savoury to choose from on their menu, I couldn’t get my head around the idea that this tiny little shop would provide gluten free treats!
Although the menu states that you may have to order the gluten free batter in advance during peak season, this little business is more than happy to help.
I chose a simple option with maple syrup, but with more extravagent ideas including the “Tailender” which includes a small donation to a dog charity in the price and “The Amsterdammer”, I will definitely be back for more!

That’s great Sarah! You look like you are enjoying the pancake. I have read about this but have not got to Woolacombe yet as it is about 50 miles from where I live. However, I did meet the people who run the scafe when they were recently running their pancake stall at a vintage rally and I had a lovely chat with them, as I recognised they were the people who make gluten free pancakes in Woolacombe. Unfortunately they don’t make gluten free ones ‘on the road’ but their ordinary ones looked delicious.
I must say the menu is pretty impressive with something for everyone. I agree the Amsterdammer sounds amazing and some of the sweet ones with marshmallows look good too! Just a word of warning if you were thinking of having the tailender – coeliacs cannot eat maltesers.
