15+ gluten free places to eat in Berlin, Germany

If you’re looking for gluten free Berlin, you’ve come to the right place! I was recently lucky enough to travel to go away on a mini-break. And I can tell you there are loads of gluten free options in Berlin. Finding gluten free places to eat in Berlin was actually really easy, thanks to the help of some fantastic recommendations from people on Instagram.

This city is absolutely beautiful, filled with amazing history, art and architecture. Generally speaking, there were a lot more options for eating gluten free in Berlin than I ever imagined. There are also loads of vegan and vegetarian eateries. Which was great because I went with my friend Lauren who is veggie.

We both managed to cram a lot of food – and sights – into our two-night trip. I’ll add our map of places to eat to the bottom of this post. This includes all the places we did go (below) and the recommendations we got but never had a chance to visit. You can also watch my gluten free Berlin video here too!

Lauren asked her German friend to create some simple translations for us. It was really interesting because she said ‘coeliac’ isn’t really a ‘thing’. People talk about being gluten free but coeliac is less understood. In the end it turned out nearly everyone we encountered spoke fluent English so we didn’t really have a need for it. We even met a waiter who was originally from Devon!

But enough of the trip tales – here are all the best gluten free places to eat in Berlin! I didn’t have any issues eating at any of these places but please remember to double check with staff before choosing where you’re going to eat. Especially if you too have coeliac disease!

Pizzaria Simela

This was actually the first place we ate gluten free in Berlin and was recommended to me by a few different people. Pizzaria Simela does an array of gluten free (and lactose free on request) pizzas as well as the holy grail – gluten free beer! I really enjoyed the gluten free pizza here, which is on a buckwheat base – though it seemed a little but more like a wrap pizza. The base was very thin but it was certainly a bit different and it was nice to sit outside and watch the world go by as we ate!

Jüte Backerie

Jüte Backerie was number one of my list of places to try in Berlin – a 100% gluten free bakery! I was SO excited when we rocked up there on our first morning, to find gluten free bread and cakes galore. I enjoyed a bread roll and a pastry – both of which were incredible. I even went back and bought more bread to have later because it was so delicious. I’d definitely recommend a visit here.

Witty’s Currywurst

If there was one thing I wanted to try in Berlin it was currywurst – a pork sausage with chips and a curried ketchup sauce. I was flooded with recommendations for Witty’s so it was our first stop on our food trail to find lunch. I wasn’t disappointed at all – it was absolutely delicious! It felt like a very naughty lunch but it was definitely worth it.

Brotquelle

I found Brotquelle by accident when looking for gluten free recommendations – it turned out it was another 100% gluten free bakery a little further outside of town. There was a fantastic-looking selection of gluten free pastries and I bought a couple to try. My favourite was a frangipane-type cake which I’m dying to recreate at home, it was beautiful!

Vapiano

Vapiano is an Italian food chain which is all over Berlin. It was another chain which was recommended to me by a lot of people and it does a range of gluten free pasta and pizzas too. We made this our last stop before we flew home and it was worth the wait! The gluten free pizza was delicious and next time I’d love to try the gluten free pasta as it looked delicious!

Lily Burger Express

I had a few recommendations for Lily Burger Express so we headed out there for dinner one evening. I found their menu a little confusing. I mean for starters, I probably should have learnt German, but the menu was like a novel and we were a bit confused as to how it was vegan too as everything was meat! Turns out, they have a vegan equivalent to everything – and the burgers and onion rings are all gluten free! I ordered mine in a gluten free bun and when it arrived, it was absolutely worth the confusion – it was a beast, and so good!

Tribeca ice-cream

I was absolutely adamant I wanted to find a gluten free ice-cream cone in Berlin, and after about an hour of researching online and through various apps I managed to track one down! We travelled about 30 minutes across the city to find one, but the trip to Tribeca ice-cream was so worth it! It was in a beautiful area and all the ice-cream is plant-based. The gluten free ice-cream cones were huge and so worth it! I’d definitely recommend a trip there.

Beets & Roots

There were a couple of Beets & Roots outlets we came across in Berlin and once again, this was somewhere recommended to me by a few people. Their allergens are clearly labelled on the menu boards and they do a variety of ‘bowls’ which seemed to be all the rage. They’re a bit like Poke or Buddha bowls – I had one with wild rice and salmon and it was delicious.

Dean & David

Another ‘healthy’ chain throughout Berlin, there happened to be a Dean & David right opposite our apartment. They had a good selection of drinks and some food but I enjoyed their brownie. I’d definitely stop by here again if I had time as the selection of salad bowls looked pretty good.

Happy Baristas

I was told to visit Happy Baristas for ‘the best coffee in Berlin’ and I certainly was NOT disappointed. It was definitely one of the cool places to be as it was very busy and the decor was amazing. The coffee was beautiful and they had all sorts of gluten free cakes in the counter to choose from. There was also a good selection of gluten free options on the breakfast and lunch menus, though we didn’t try them.

Amorino gelato

I really was craving some fruity gelato as it was so HOT during our trip, so was delighted to see an Amorina right underneath our apartment! Although they don’t have gluten free cones like in London, they did have a lot of gluten free flavours and the mango and lychee ones went down a treat!

Funk You Cakes

We popped into Funk You cakes after I spotted it on the Find Me Gluten Free app. A lot of the cakes in their counter were marked as gluten free and vegan. There was a big selection of ‘raw food’ type cakes and I didn’t buy any at the time, but they did look tasty. Forgot to get a photo though!

Other gluten free Berlin recommendations

There were some other places I didn’t get a chance to try, but I’ll list them here in case anyone is going and wants to try them out! Please do remember to always ask anywhere you go about cross contamination – I had a good experience at the places above but cannot vouch for the below recommendations, I’m only passing on recommendations I was given.

AERA Bread – I can’t believe I didn’t know about this before I went but apparently they do amazing gluten free bread! Top of my list for next time.

Rosmarin – Apparently they have a good selection of gluten free food, including pizza.

Chutnify – Someone recommended this to me on Instagram as a good place to try.

Chupenga – Apparently they do a good selection of Mexican burrito bowls, open Mon-Fri.

The Steel Vintage Bike Cafe – This was recommended as having good salad and gluten free cakes.

Patta’s Finest Jacket Potatoes – Another place which is supposed to be pretty good for gluten free.

Five Elephant – This was recommended as somewhere to check out, but we didn’t get time.

I thought I’d pop all my gluten free finds – as well as some recommendations – on this handy map. Yellow are the places we visited, purple are places I was recommended but we didn’t get to. I’ve also chucked a couple of the main landmarks in green and a lovely bar recommended to us in orange, that we didn’t get a chance to get to.
